All of his life, Blackwell has been looking for a break, a place to call home--and suddenly someone's come to take that away from him again. Now he's chasing a mysterious artifact on a one-way trip into the heart of danger, and as friends begin to fall around him he'll have to decide if he can stand up and fight back.
Beasts of the Walking City is an epic-fantasy thriller, full of steampunk cities that float and walk and fly, wild magic, time travel, and the fate of two worlds hanging in the balance. With characters you'll be rooting for, and a plot that really surprises, you won't want to put this book down.

Beasts of the Walking City was great fun to read. There are a few minor typos but enough to detract from the story. Blackwell makes for a delightful main character who ends up a hero in spite of himself. Different fantastical and magical species, tribes, and families people Blackwell's world. He starts out as a mercenary, becomes a "retriever" (which seems a fancy word for thief), and finds himself a pet for a time. This book has many facets, including magic and time travel. It's all put together in a new way that made it great fun to read. Plot and character development are excellent! I recommend it for fans of both science fiction and fantasy.Product details

Beasts of the Walking City eBook Del Law Reviews
Blackwell is one of the last of his people, an Hulgliev who is just scraping by as a mercenary. When he gets a job to steal a 300 year old artifact, he finds himself in the middle of a war for his world.
I almost put this book aside after the first few pages. The exposition was a little clunky, the characters way too familiar, and it just seemed generally derivative and kind of boring.
I am so glad that I stuck with it, though, despite my poor first impression. Once I got past the first few pages, the author opens up the throttle and lets you loose in a really intriguing and fun universe. I would put this tentatively in the "new weird" family, just because it is a kind of a genre stew, with elements of a lot of different branches of sci-fi and fantasy. Podships, mages, and Al Capone are an odd mix, but the author treats his subjects with humor and sensitivity, keeping the story grounded. For all the flash, it's a coming of age for Blackwell, who has to confront both his own fears and the tragic history of his race, which has been hunted almost to extinction. Secondary characters, particularly Kjat, a mysterious young woman with her own devastating burdens to bear, are also well developed and have their own arcs and voices.
All in all, I found the book really intriguing, and found myself racing through the pages once I got into it. I really hope to see the sequel, because the "other stories" that get a mention sound really freaking awesome.

Reviewers Note After submitting my review the author contacted me and graciously offered to send me an updated copy of the book.
I began this book as I do so many of my cheap or free ebooks, with very few expectations.
I've read numerous books that should never have been published. They lack story, characters the reader can care about, and proper grammar, spelling, form, etc.
This book suffers terribly from a lack of proofreading. There are missing letters in words, missing words altogether, and definite tense shifting that can throw you out of the story.
But, with all of that, the story is good. Very good. That's why I've given it four stars. The story almost saves the erroneous errors.
Some have said there is too much going on. That the constant point of view shifts were not palatable.
I disagree with this.
Some thought the inclusion of Al Capone was over the top. Yeah, maybe it was, but he served a purpose and illustrated a fact of this world rather well.
All of that aside, I loved this world. These characters. The mix of worlds, people, creatures, magic and technology. It is rich and diverse.
The changes in point of view didn't bother me. To me it was like a movie, where you watch multiple characters deal with their story-lines that intertwine. And it all circles back to Blackwell. It's not like the shifts in viewpoint were aimless.
It takes time, this story. Not everything is laid bare for the reader right from the start. We learn a little bit more with each chapter. This is a good thing. In a world where instant gratification rules, I think a lot of readers and movie watchers, have forgotten the story matters.
And, there is constant action. Constant developments. It's not like the build-up is dull and dragged out.
We are made to care for Blackwell right from the start, when we are introduced to him he is struggling in his world. English speech is difficult for him. He is unaware of much of his world. And his aunt treats him like dirt.
As we delve into Blackwell, he seems a bit adolescent. But this changes too, as he grows and learns.
Blackwell rises above his beginning. However, he is not perfect. There is tarnish on Blackwell, and that's what makes him easier to relate to. More, likable in my opinion. He's real. He struggles with the choices that lie before him. Should he do what is most beneficial to him? Or should he be the bigger "man"?
I think that more people should give this book a deeper read. Instead of giving up on it, stick with it. It's well constructed, the story. However, the author should really find someone to proofread and edit it for him so that an updated, corrected version can be enjoyed by future readers.
And, though the ending is done in such a way that we can leave Blackwell and feel complete in his story, there are still unanswered questions that I would love to see answered. I want to see more of this world, and all of the worlds that come together in it. So, I hope he writes a well-edited sequel.
Oh, and a glossary of words and terms would be beneficial. Pronunciation is completely up to the reader.
It had everything that I enjoy--SteamPunk, Sci-Fi, Magical Fantasy, Aliens, Time/Dimension Travel, Al Capone (don't even ask)....trouble is, it had TOO much. Too many varied characters, too many unknown words, too many different species, too many conflicts, etc.
I can see indications of the Author's vision for this series. I think it shows a lot of potential, but it was just too confusing. The author's plotline was very clear to himself, I'm sure--but the story just lost me. Maybe the world building was just too vast to be revealed in this first book.
I finished it, but I wasn't really satisfied with the ending. I almost rated this as 2-Stars, but there were things that I did like about it. The main character, Blackwell, was really pretty cool. Some of the alien species were quite original. The writing was good, although it needs some editing. So it's an OK, 3-Star read for me. I doubt that I'll continue the series, though; it just felt like too much work to read this one.
